(The author, David Smith, is Mt. Gilead’s new manager. He’s agreed to write columns periodically in the Speckled Paw Times.)

The past three weeks:

I’m getting acclimated to the rhythm of this new position as town manager. I feel that I’ve been able to be in Mt Gilead at times that are beneficial for board/staff needs, citizenry and myself. I’ve found it easy to work many hours and I feel that I am already behind in ALL that needs to be accomplished. Hence, I realize the need for patience.

  1. I’ve met with LKC engineering to discuss the status of our sewer study; met with Mohawk to discuss wastewater discharge. All projects are being studied by LKC.
  2. Facade grant approved for 105 South Main St.
  3. Have had resolution to Scarboro Street road closing. Granted zoning ordinance as per the directive of our town attorney.
  4. Met with Piedmont Triad Council to discuss ALL of the opportunities in Mt Gilead – planning, streetscape, infrastructure, parks. They will be working with us in 2022 to address zoning and streetscape design/projects.
  5. Met with NC Mainstreet; took class on Mainstreet issues; met with Mainstreet representatives on Monday.
  6. Attended three formal meet and greets! I’m in daily meet and greets while out and about in ALL parts of town.
  7. Met with five prospective new businesses for zoning compliance/opportunities.
  8. Multiple discussions with town budget auditors. Met with the auditor on Monday.
  9. Attended NC General Assembly ARPA funding announcement of $3.5 million for Mt. Gilead’s sewer study needs.
  10. Started working with engineers, econ development, public works to begin planning for how we will utilize the funds. Requests for funding must be addressed as to how we plan to utilize $3.5 million.
  11. Met with Montgomery County manager re econ development, recreation, working together.
  12. Drive through town with public works.
  13. Multiple meetings with police.
  14. Multiple staff meetings; great staff; need for cross-training.
  15. Department head meetings.
  16. THERE IS A LOT MORE …

The past week:

  • Parade: What a great event!
  • Town gateway entry sign and landscaping project to begin.
  • Highlands sign: exploring the cost of electronic sign for better communication.
  • NC Mainstreet was in Mt. Gilead.
  • Piedmont Triad Regional Council to provide planning and zoning, ARPA funding guidance.
  • Water/sewer bills: eventually can be found online; new form of payment at office/drop off (credit card reader); possible lower fees to pay online; bank draft opportunity.
  • See the need for businesses to extend hours for shopping opportunities.
  • We need Food Truck Fridays.
  • We need daycare services in town.
  • We need job training programs (Montgomery County Community College).
  • We need to look at Main Street as an econ development project – housing, business, commercial development all along Main Street.
  • Start the Main Street pocket park project.
  • Town communication must improve: i.e. town calendar
  • Attended the Rural Economic Development Institute (REDI) this week.

I’m having fun! Thanks for the opportunity to serve.
