For the first time in more than eight years, the Small Business Center at Montgomery Community College underwent a state audit/program review in recent weeks to ensure that it’s supporting the Small Business Center Network and that its director, Savannah Heath, has the required credentials and background to support the center.

According to Heath, MCC’s Small Business Center “was applauded due to its innovative offerings, such as the first-of-its-kind Guns, Goals & Grits Business Summit in February, which was held for for the gunsmithing curriculum program at MCC as well as gunsmithing businesses in the community, surrounding community and state. Most gunsmithing students who attend MCC either want to own a gunsmithing business or currently own one, so this offering was an evident need.”

Heath said the center was also recognized for its collaborative efforts with centers in surrounding counties. “We have shown the network that it’s not a competition,” she said. “Our goal is to help the business community, not hinder it. There are no county lines with business. It was obvious for us to partner, being that a ton of our clients and seminar attendees are from each other’s counties. Instead of fighting for the client, we decided to join forces and serve our client.”

In addition, the center recently hired a part-time employee, Rebecca Spivey, a medical assisting student at MCC who formerly did work study in the Workforce Development Center. She was born and raised in Montgomery County.
