Do you jazzercise or aerobicize? Maybe you’re a cyclist. Have you thought about becoming a recyclist? How about combining your exercise routine with recycling to recyclicise?
What’s recyclicise? Glad you asked! Actually, recyclicise is a word I made up. You may have heard of plogging (someone else made up that word), where you pick up litter while jogging. Well, since I don’t jog, but need to stay in shape and do my part to recycle, I came up with recyclicise. OK, maybe it won’t start a trend, but if it helps me stay in shape while simultaneously doing something good for our town and the environment, I’m all about it.
Here’s how it started. Each morning while taking my daily stroll I noticed bottles, cans and other recyclables along my way and just started picking them up. Before long I was noticing a cleaner roadside. What’s more, the area seemed to stay cleaner longer – in other words, the cleaner the roadside appeared the less likely folks were to throw things from a car window. So I made it a part of my daily exercise routine – and have now taken it to the next level.
My wife, Linda, has decided to join me in my morning recyclicise regimen and we have decided to adopt the street we live on – we figure, since we adopted our church home we might as well adopt the street too, right? We are now the proud parents of Pee Dee Church Road.
So, do you want to stay in shape and do something good for the environment? How about adopting your very own street, or perhaps your church or civic organization will adopt with you? It’s really easy – simply send an email to one of these folks and they will get you up and running (I mean, recyclicising): Misty Bowman at mwbowman@ncdot.gov (Montgomery County) or Joanna Peele at jpeele@ncdot.gov (Richmond County). God created us and the world we live in for His purpose and glory – I believe He is pleased when we’re good stewards of both. Amen.
