Editor’s note: Jeff and Linda Cathcart recently bought the old Pee Dee Presbyterian Church outside Mt. Gilead and are converting it into their home. Through weekly installments, they’re updating Speckled Paw readers on their progress; below is the sixth and final part of the series. Here are the previous articles: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5.
And then God sent the rain … “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:25)
Of course, Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount were pointing to Himself, metaphorically describing obstacles and persecution His followers would encounter; despite trials and tribulations, difficulties will not impair those who choose to make their life about Him. Just as the weather this week did not impede our journey from church to home. Although many of the days were spent working inside due to the pop-up storms that showed up most every day, we were able to remain on task. Even the thirsty grass of the nearly 2.5-acre corner property is growing green again.
The roof repairs will be completed next week, Lord willing. The storms didn’t stop the plumbers and electricians from getting the fixtures mounted and the wiring up to standards. Everything is connected and working great. And the one indulgence we built into the budget for us, the whirlpool tub, was installed in the former fellowship hall (now the multipurpose building). And what a blessing to be able to do laundry at our new home with the addition of the washer and dryer this week.
Things dried out on Friday and we were able to paint the steps and add a few things to the outside for beautification. The final two items of donation, the church organs (circa 1970s), were gifted to a budding musician who was on the paint crew. He and his son will use the organs to practice on while they pursue their musical aspirations.
We’re so glad to report that most everything that was in the old Pee Dee Church when we bought it has been preserved in place, donated or repurposed. All in all, nothing was hindered this week despite the weather and we’re looking to finish up next week, on time. As God promises us, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5-6) Whenever He sends us to it, He makes a way for us to do it, in His time, and for His purpose and glory. Amen.
