By Mark Scott, director, Market MontGOmery Chamber & Tourism • Local businesses are desperately seeking quality workers.
Local high school seniors will graduate and need work in a few months.
There are many others in the area looking for work.
What can be done to help solve these issues? Multiple agencies are putting on a “hiring fair.”
It will be held March 14 at Montgomery Community College with the dual purpose of helping residents to get jobs and businesses to find quality workers from within and outside of Montgomery County.
A unique aspect of this event is the participation of high school seniors. It has been especially wonderful working with Wade Auman and Matthew Swain, two top-notch gentlemen who work with Montgomery County Schools. They’re helping high school seniors understand what type of full-time work they’ll be looking for when they graduate in a few months, by getting them in front of local human resource managers. They’re also helping seniors find part-time work while they attend MCC.
There will also be a great component for eighth-graders, where they can attend a morning session and find out about these jobs. This exposure will help them decide what type of classes they need to take during their high school years to be prepared for four-year college, MCC or skilled labor positions.
From the chamber of commerce side, we’re happy to get local HR managers in front of some of Montgomery County Schools’ brightest and finest students who will be looking to enter the workforce in a few months. Our businesses take pride in their products and we know they will further instill a great work ethic in our young adults.
Other people looking for work are encouraged to attend, as well, because many businesses will be taking resumes and setting up interviews with those in attendance.
Here’s a schedule:
8:30-11:45 a.m.: The eighth-graders from Montgomery County Schools will attend.
1-2:30 p.m.: Seniors going into the workforce from Montgomery County Schools will attend.
1-4 p.m.: The hiring fair will be open to all seeking work.
