By Mark Scott, director, Market MontGOmery Chamber & Tourism • Details are in on the hiring fair tomorrow (March 14) at Montgomery Community College’s Troy campus, featuring agencies looking for workers in education, health care, law enforcement, food preparation and hospitality, trucking, manufacturing, construction and more.

There will be employers from the North Carolina Zoo, Subway restaurants, North Carolina Highway Patrol, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, Montgomery County Schools, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Census Bureau, Myrick Construction, Wright Foods, McRae Industries, Troy Lumber, Mowawk Industries, Future Truckers of America, staffing agencies and more.

NCWorks is coordinating the event along with Market Montgomery Chamber & Tourism, Montgomery County Schools, MCC, the UNC-Charlotte Small Business Center and others.

NCWorks and the school system added a long-range vision to the fair as well. They do not discourage anyone from attending four-year colleges, but they realize college is not for everyone and they want to help eighth-grade students decide which career path is best for them by letting them meet HR managers and find out what is involved with some area jobs. These students will be deciding if they want to begin taking college preparatory classes or career and technical classes as they enter high school next year, and this event will be a tool to help them decide.

The morning session will be ONLY for eighth-graders from Montgomery County schools.

The afternoon session will be open to the general public from 1-4 p.m., but adults are encouraged to come from 2-4 p.m. because from 1-2 p.m. there will be more than 150 high school seniors attending, looking for full- or part-time work upon graduation in May.
