  1. Fact or fiction: There will be a Bigfoot Brisket Cook-Off as part of the festival paying $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third.

Answer: FICTION. There is a Bigfoot Brisket Cook-Off, but the top prize is $1,000 with a total prize purse of $1,500. The event is in Troy, Oct. 20.

 

  1. Fact or fiction: There will be a 100-mile run in the Uwharrie National Forest where competitors will run five laps of about 20.5 miles.

Answer: FACT. The Uwharrie 100 has both a 100-mile (five loops) and a 100-kilometer (three loops) event, Oct. 20.

 

  1. Fact or fiction: There are at least two local street festivals on Oct. 20.

Answer: FACT. Mt. Gilead will have a street festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20, while Troy will have a street festival beginning mid-afternoon and continuing through the evening.

 

  1. Fact or fiction: There will be a gold panning/gold mining demonstration where people will pan for gold and a few small gold nuggets will be hidden in the Uwharrie River.

Answer: FICTION. There is a gold panning/gold mining demonstration waiting to be scheduled as soon as they find out which day or days will be available … but any gold found will be naturally occurring gold.

 

5. Fact or fiction: There will be a fishing tournament call the “Crappiest Fishing Tournament Ever.”

Answer: FACT. What a great “hook,” giving the crappie fishing tournament that name. It will begin at 7 a.m. Oct. 20 on Lake Tillery with the weigh-in at Lilly’s Bridge Marina.
