By Mark Scott, director, Market MontGOmery Chamber & Tourism •  What does the leader of your chamber of commerce do? A typical day might go something like this …

Get information together to mail to a fifth-grade student from Wake County assigned to learn about Montgomery County and give a report to his class. He might end up visiting the area one day.

While doing that, you get a phone call from one of the 13 welcome centers in the state; they need more “Discover Montgomery County” magazines and “Experience the Uwharries” brochures, because the Uwharrie Forest and area lakes are popular attractions.

After shipping those brochures, don’t forget to write a letter to the N.C. Arts Council telling them how valuable STARworks is to the area, because the local arts center has applied for a grant and would like a letter of support.

Drive to Kernersville for a Piedmont Triad Outdoor Recreation Advisory Council meeting to make sure we’re doing all we can to have our area promoted around the state, and to see how we can promote outdoor activities in North Carolina as aggressively as Colorado and Wyoming promote their outdoors. I guess that means a meeting of the state Outdoor Recreation Committee can’t be far away.

Return that phone call from the company looking to expand and bring 75 new jobs to Montgomery County. And, after they ask during the conversation about having managers relocate to Montgomery County, put together a sample brochure to be used to recruit potential managers and other workers to Montgomery County.

Meetings for the hiring fair were successful, so it’s a “go,” but now we need to promote it and get HR managers to the fair. Get that press release out to the newspapers and sway some television stations to report about the fair. Don’t forget to promote it on social media and take pictures so it can be promoted after the fact, because the bottom line is letting people know there are good jobs here and our employers need more good workers.

Don’t forget to send membership information to businesses which are up for renewal next month and check the invitations that Montgomery Community College has put together for the Legislative lunch.

Hold on, the answering machine has another person looking for housing information because his son will be attending MCC next semester.

BUT MOST OF ALL, remember that this week is the first anniversary of the Speckled Paw opening. Write your column for their e-newsletter and remind readers they can get ice cream and milkshake specials and all sorts of perfect patio drinks on Saturday (March 23). And remember to ask Kyle and Myra to send pictures so you can post it on Facebook to bring more attention to them.

I almost forgot, it’s time to start promoting the opening of the off-road trails in less than two weeks.

And another business has an anniversary next month. Get to work on their specials.

Stop typing and start working.

But there are so many more things we do.

Sorry. Out of time and space to type in this column.

Man I love this job!
